Media essay In this essay I will analyse the extract from hotel Babylon and identifying how ethnicity is represented. I will be demonstrating if and how, the extract uses , archetypes and stereotypes, also I will apple the Levi-Strauss concept of binary operations, I will be using camera, sound, editing and mise-en-since to do this and make reference to them in my essay. During the extract of hotel Babylon there is a lot of editing throughout the extract to show panic in the running scene where they immigrants and the Asian woman are running around trying to hid from the police this is shown to us through the fast editing pace and the straight cuts that are used throughout the extract. Also at the beginning of the extract when the white woman is at the desk of the reception area and the police come in there is an eye line match this shows the audience that both of them are in control and are in charge and have more authority as neither looks down at one another. Furthermore in the extract there is a shot reverse shot when the one of the immigrants faints in the cupboard when hiding and the Asian woman and the immigrant who acts like a doctor helps her, the Asian woman is shock at the fact the immigrant knows what’s happening and hat was wrong with her and this shows us that not all immigrants are not educated and he is and she sees this throw his actions, in my opinion because the woman say thank you its…. Adam Is not it like she is not sure what his name is shows even though she is an immigrant she is a higher status then them and does treat them as a lower class. During the extract we see through mise-en-scene which ethnicity they are and which class they are represented as, because at the beginning the white woman is wearing all white and looking smart and sophisticated which shows purity and shows she is more of a dominate race where as the Asian woman was wearing a black suit and a bright red shirt, the black represents death and sadness as a lot of immigrants have died because they have been cult however the red represents love towards them and she wants to help them. At the beginning of the extract we see a smart black man dresses smartly and he is obviously a guest there and when the police walk in they look down at the showing a low angle shot which shows camera angles and this represents again that the white class is more dominate and the black man is of a lower status .lastly we see near the end of the extract a black immigrant wearing all red uniform but it looks more like a prison uniform which suggest danger also as everything around him is red it shows he is an easy target for the police as he has headphones in and wasn’t listening and this is why he was an easy target and he eventually got caught in the extract there are a lot of different ethnicities and they are in different outfits to shows higher or lower class and the immigrants show weakness through fainting and tripping over things because their close are cheap and not expensive so they would be weak also whereas the white dominate race are smart cloths and look carm and collected because the police know what they’re doing but still manage to get an immigrant. In the locker room the immigrant that was caught has personal belongings and photos this shows us he wasn’t such as number he was a person and should be treated the way he was and they should have more respect. Throughout the extract the use of sound is a key concept because the white woman used dialog to give the immigrants more time and tries to convince them the police that she is on their side by treating the staff horrible my using diegetic sound and clicking her fingers. The calm non-diegetic music changes and builds to a tense atmosphere when they are all running around scared. However this soon changes when the immigrant is caught because it is sad, soft and emotional, and this continues on into the next seen when emotion are high in the cafeteria, because the employees who were close to him are sad. During the extract a lot of camera angles in the extract, firstly there is a wide establishing shot, this is where we see everything as the police officers walk into the hotel towards the reception, this shows us that the white male officers and the white woman have more power and all eyes are on them when they walk in and the lady is standing at the reception. Also in the extract there are many love angle and high angle shots showing the different class and how dominate they are, so for example at the beginning of the extract when the white officers walk in there is a black man in a suit he overly is higher up then the immigrants but the white officers still look down on him showing vulnerability and weakness they use a low angle shot to demonstrate this. The white class also dominates at the end of the extract when the Asian woman is ordered around by the white woman when she tells the Asian woman to get rid of the immigrants. Furthermore their there are many close ups of the Asian woman, white officers, white woman, immigrants and the woman who fainted to show the different ethnicity and the classes they are from and the power that they have. As I have already said the white class dominates and this shows during the whole extract this shows binary opposition between the white people and people of different ethnicity and the class they are from. During the extract the white class are seen as the villains and these are archetypes because the officers don’t listen to the Asian woman but do listen to the white woman. In conclusion I have identified and demonstrated how the extract uses archetypes, binary opposition and stereotypes and I have also described why the extract conforms to hegemony and the fact that the white race is dominate throughout the whole of the extract, however there are some aspects of the screen which challenge this but not many i have shown this through camera angles, mise-en-scene,editing and sound.

  1. Tina, you have made some relevant points and given examples in all four technical areas.
